Body Rock is a song I wrote back in 2020 and it took a whole pandemic and more than two years for its success to happen.
In 2020 I did not have the same wisdom and experience I have now; we had planned a music video for Body Rock during a Sicilian holiday (which was more of an escape from the Covid London situation): a gorgeous animated rendition of the song (created by Margherita Giusti, a talented Italian animator) with an actor as the lead movement, I was so in love with how he danced on those heels, his glamour, I knew he was the perfect fit for the video!
20.000 views on the video and around 30.000 streams were achieved in the first year, but that was it.
Fast forward to 2022, things changed drastically. Thanks to a sync company from the U.S.A., we managed to land this track on one of the biggest Netflix releases of the year, a film called Senior Year, starring Rebel Wilson.
When I received the news, three months before the actual film release, I was happy, but not ecstatic. The payment for the sync was underwhelming, and I just thought it was not going to be actually listened to by anyone.
When the film came out, I was at my boyfriend's (in Essex, UK). I turned on the television on the day and played the film, I kept watching it, waiting for my song to pop up and I had almost lost hope until... the prom party scene! Suddenly I hear my voice fading in and everyone at the prom is dancing to Body Rock, right there, on the big screen!
I started jumping up and down and recorded a reel for my followers: I felt so proud and in shock!
Then the streams started going up, massively, overnight. People from all around the world were commenting on my Soundcloud, Youtube, TikTok and so on, asking me how I had written the song, wanting the song to spread even more across the world, it was incredible seeing my new fans getting in touch, witnessing the impact of my songwriting and performance.
I never thought that Body Rock could become this successful, I am thankful for this every day. It's hard to be an independent artist, you rarely see results that excite you, so when they do happen, it's time to fucking celebrate!
